In this View of Nazareth, painted in 1840 after his return to France, Montfort probably referred to several of the sketches that he had made around this subject while he was there. Several of the Louvre sheets (inv. 11202 to 11208) enable his time in the city to be precisely dated: he stayed there in November 1838. Two watercolours, preparatory to this work, recently appeared on the art market (sale Paris, Tajan, 24 May 2011; and sale, Paris, Gros & Delettrez, 16 June 2014, lot 1): they also show how meticulously Montfort approached the production of the present canvas.
